(The Title ‘Genius’ Isn’t Just for Show (1)

“He…” Gao Ran hesitated; he didn’t want to tell Huo Mian because she might be sad…

“Gao Ran, where are you right now?”

“I’m outside the municipal bureau, I was just…”

“Wait for me, I’ll be right there.” Before Gao Ran could finish his sentence, Huo Mian interrupted him and hung up.

18 minutes later, Huo Mian arrived outside the bureau in her Audi R8.

“Huo Mian… the truth is…:”

Huo Mian immediately cut him off. “Gao Ran, let’s talk later. Take me inside first, I need to see Qin Chu.”

Then, she tried to pull Gao Ran inside, but he didn’t budge.

“What’s wrong?” Confused, Huo Mian looked at Gao Ran, who was wearing a dejected look on his face.

“Huo Mian… you can’t see him.”

“What do you mean?” She froze.

“You can’t see Qin Chu.”

“Why not?” Huo Mian asked as her heart sank.

“He’s detained…”

“Detained? What do you mean? Wasn’t it just an interrogation?” Huo Mian was dumbstruck.

Gao Ran explained slowly, “After her death, Song Yishi left a lot of evidence that pointed to Qin Chu… Mayor Song takes this case very seriously and already asked the provincial major crimes unit to intervene. They’re a resolute bunch, and decided to detain him first and put him on trial next week.”

“For what?” Huo Mian asked with a trembling voice, and Gao Ran replied, “They’ve… accused him of murder.”

“What if he’s convicted?” Huo Mian’s heart was in her throat when she asked this.

After struggling for a few seconds, Gao Ran looked down and replied quietly, “You should know about our country’s laws. People convicted of murder… will face a death sentence. Moreover, this is more than just a murder, the corpse was dismembered. The provincial bureau placed this case as a priority, naming it major homicide 317.”

Upon hearing this, Huo Mian stumbled back a few steps, almost falling off the steps outside the bureau.

Gao Ran caught her just in time and tried to console her, “Huo Mian… don’t think too much about it. Qin Chu has GK’s legal team helping him. Plus, there’s no way he committed murder. If we can find more proof, we would be able to clear his name.”

“Of course he would never murder Song Yishi, we were together this entire time. He only went to her house for a little while, where would he have the time to kill anyone…”

“You were with him? Then why…” Gao Ran paused abruptly.

Huo Mian looked at him with teary eyes. “I know… Qin Chu’s immediate family cannot be his time witness…”

Indeed; so what if Huo Mian could prove that she was with Qin Chu at the time? She was his wife; even if they were divorced, her testimony would still be invalid.

“That asshole Huo Siqian… how long did he plan this out? Where did he get so much proof?” Every cell in Gao Ran’s body lit up in fury as he thought about what Qin Chu said just now.

Huo Mian wiped away her tears. She blamed herself, “Yeah… I wonder how long that scumbag planned this out for… I shouldn’t have let Qin Chu go last night. It’s all my fault…”

“It’s not your fault, even if you didn’t let Qin Chu go, Huo Siqian would’ve thought of something else.”

“Huo Siqian, you psycho…” Huo Mian clenched her fists hatefully.

“Huo Mian, you should go home and wait for my phone call. I’m going to ask my dad for help, see if he can arrange for you to see Qin Chu.

“That’d be best.” Huo Mian looked at Gao Ran with teary eyes; she really wanted to see Qin Chu right now. “Gao Ran, do you know any details of Song Yishi’s death? Do you know what kind of proof they have?”

“I don’t, I’m not qualified to participate in this case, and the evidence is completely sealed off. Aside from the bureau and Song Yishi’s parents, no one even knows how she died, let alone details.”

“Okay, I understand.” Huo Mian nodded.

“Huo Mian, go home and get some rest. You look awful.”

After saying goodbye to Gao Ran, Huo Mian got into her Audi; rather than going back to South Hill Manor, however, she drove straight to the Huo Corporation.
